Ride to Mustang:  12-Day Himalayan Motorbike Adventure from Kathmandu

The Journey of a Lifetime

Imagine this: you’re cruising through Nepal’s ever-changing landscapes on a powerful motorcycle — winding mountain roads, ancient villages, deep gorges, riverside trails, and finally, the high desert of Mustang. Each turn brings new sights, sounds, and stories. The 12-day Mustang Motorbike Tour is not just a ride; it’s an epic journey that takes you from the chaos of Kathmandu to the serenity of Muktinath, one of the most sacred sites in Nepal, and back through some of the most beautiful and lesser-known parts of the country. This route is perfect for adventure seekers who want to go beyond the usual. You'll pass through Bandipur, Kusma, Lete, Tatopani, Pokhara, and Gorkha — each place with its own charm. From cozy village stays to open roads under the shadow of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, it’s the kind of trip that stays with you long after you’ve parked your bike.

Why You’ll Love This Ride

  • You’ll ride beside the Kali Gandaki River Gorge, the deepest in the world.
  • Reach the spiritual site of Muktinath at nearly 3,800 meters.
  • Soak in natural hot springs at Tatopani — a treat for your tired body.
  • Ride through quiet apple orchards and the stunning village of Marpha.
  • Cross hanging bridges, ride under waterfalls, and camp beneath the stars.
  • A mix of paved highways, dirt roads, and rocky trails — enough thrill for any rider.
  • Experience authentic Nepali culture and Tibetan-Buddhist traditions.

Who Is This Trip For?

If you love motorcycles, mountains, and meaningful travel — this is your trip. This tour is best suited for riders who have some off-road experience and are looking to push their boundaries. The roads can be rough, the weather can change, and the altitudes are real — but if you're up for the challenge, this will be one of the most rewarding rides you’ll ever take.Whether you're traveling solo, with friends, or as part of a riding club, this ride is for the ones who prefer the smell of dust and pine over hotel lobbies, who'd rather sip ginger tea with locals than sit in traffic. It’s not about racing — it’s about experiencing Nepal at your own rhythm, on two wheels.

When to Ride: Best Seasons

The best time to take this journey is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Spring offers wildflowers, moderate temperatures, and great visibility. Autumn, right after the monsoon, provides the clearest skies and the most stunning views of the Himalayas. Avoid the monsoon season (June–August) — it brings landslides, slippery roads, and unpredictable conditions. Winters (December–February) are too cold and risky due to snow at high passes like Muktinath. Plan smart, ride smooth!

What You’ll Ride

The roads you’ll be covering are as diverse as the landscapes — smooth tarmac, gravel paths, dry riverbeds, steep climbs, and sharp hairpins. You’ll need a reliable, tough machine. Recommended Bikes:

  • Royal Enfield Himalayan (411cc) – the beast for Himalayan terrain.
  • Royal Enfield Classic 500 – great torque, classic style.
  • Honda CRF or XR series – nimble and great for off-road.

 Gears to Bring:

Helmet (full-face recommended)

• Armored jacket and pants

• Waterproof boots and gloves

• Thermal wear (for high altitudes)

• Raincoat or shell layer

• Hydration pack, sunglasses, sunblock, neck buff

• Tool kit, flashlight, and a personal medical pouch

Staying & Eating Along the Way

You’ll experience a variety of stays — from clean city hotels to warm, rustic guesthouses in the mountains. In towns like Pokhara, you’ll get modern comforts. In remote spots like Lete or Muktinath, it’s about simplicity, cozy beds, and hot soups. Food? Oh yes. Think hearty Nepali dal bhat, Thakali thalis, apple pies in Marpha, and steaming bowls of thukpa. You’ll eat like a local and love every bite.

Permits & Documents

You’ll need a few things to make your journey legal and smooth:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Info Management System)
  • Valid motorcycle license
  • International Driving Permit (IDP) if you're a foreign rider
  • Passport and visa

What to Pack (Besides Gear)

  • Passport & Permits (keep extra copies)
  • Power bank & phone charger
  • Sunglasses & lip balm (the sun is strong up there)
  • Snacks like energy bars or nuts
  • Water bottle with purification tabs
  • Lightweight towel, earplugs (for noisy lodges)
  • Personal medicines and altitude sickness tablets (consult doctor)

 Safety First

While the journey is incredible, safety can’t be ignored. Your group will be supported by a backup vehicle, a mechanic, and an experienced guide trained in first aid. Ride responsibly, stay hydrated, and respect altitude. Take rest days seriously and don't ignore signs of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).

The Mustang Motorbike Tour is not just about checking places off a list. It’s about the freedom of the open road, the hospitality of mountain people, the wisdom of old temples, and the challenge of rugged terrain. Whether you ride for the thrill, the culture, or the quiet moments by a fire, this journey delivers all that and more.

Detail Itinerary

As your flight descends into the Kathmandu Valley, you’ll already sense the contrast—lush green hills ring the ancient city, and the chaos of Kathmandu pulses below. Our representative will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to your hotel in the heart of the capital. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore the vibrant Thamel neighborhood or rest and recover from your journey. In the evening, join the team for a welcome dinner and a detailed briefing about your upcoming adventure — the route, safety protocols, and what to expect on the road. 📍Overnight: Kathmandu 🍽 Meals: Welcome Dinner

Today’s all about orientation — both cultural and practical. After breakfast, join your guide for a short ride around Kathmandu’s cultural gems like Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, and Boudhanath Stupa. It’s a chance to ease into riding mode while soaking in Nepal’s rich spiritual heritage. In the afternoon, finalize your paperwork, check your gear, and get fitted to your motorbike. A mechanic will help you do a full technical check. Later, the group will gather for a pre-departure talk with your road captain. 📍Overnight: Kathmandu 🍽 Meals: Breakfast

Distance: ~145 km | Ride Time: 5–6 hours Start your engines! After an early breakfast, you’ll ride out of Kathmandu and hit the Prithvi Highway. The route follows the Trishuli River, with rolling hills and terraced fields keeping you company. Take a break midway for lunch before the road winds upward to the beautifully preserved hill town of Bandipur. Once a bustling trade hub between Tibet and India, Bandipur still exudes old-world charm with its cobbled streets, restored homes, and panoramic views of Manaslu and the Annapurna range. It’s the perfect first stop to ease into the journey. 📍Overnight: Bandipur 🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Distance: ~100 km | Ride Time: 4–5 hours The ride from Bandipur to Kusma is relatively short but rich in local flavor. Pass through picturesque villages, terraced farms, and mid-hill settlements. As you approach Kusma, the landscape becomes more dramatic, with deep gorges and hanging bridges. In fact, Kusma is known for having one of the world’s highest suspension bridges, stretching over the Kaligandaki Gorge. The town is calm and lesser explored, offering a peaceful overnight stop with stunning views and cultural charm. 📍Overnight: Kusma 🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Distance: ~110 km | Ride Time: 5–6 hours Now the adventure intensifies. After breakfast, ride through Beni — the gateway to Mustang — and gradually ascend alongside the Kali Gandaki River. The tarmac gives way to gravel as the air grows thinner. This stretch offers thrilling off-road riding and raw, untouched scenery. You’ll ride under cascading waterfalls, across wooden bridges, and past wild cliffs as you approach Lete, a small settlement nestled beneath Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. This is true Himalayan wilderness. 📍Overnight: Lete 🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Distance: ~80 km | Ride Time: 5 hours Today, you’re riding to Mustang's spiritual core — Muktinath. Pass through Marpha, a beautiful Thakali village famous for its apple orchards and whitewashed alleys. Continue through Jomsom, the district headquarters, and begin your ascent to Muktinath at 3,800 meters. The journey is challenging, with narrow tracks, loose gravel, and alpine winds. Upon reaching, visit the revered Muktinath Temple, where 108 water taps and an eternal flame await. It’s a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists — a powerful place to pause and reflect. 📍Overnight: Muktinath 🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Distance: ~100 km | Ride Time: 5–6 hours After an early morning walk or meditation near the temple, you’ll start your descent back through the Kali Gandaki Valley. The ride down is smoother but still thrilling — with cliffs, switchbacks, and dramatic mountain views all around. By afternoon, you’ll arrive in Tatopani, a village named after its famous natural hot springs. Dip in the warm waters and let your muscles relax — a perfect remedy after several high-altitude riding days. 📍Overnight: Tatopani

Distance: ~100 km | Ride Time: 5 hours Continue your descent into the lowlands as pine forests give way to rice terraces and colorful towns. The ride is more comfortable today as you reach Pokhara, Nepal’s most popular lakeside city. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel, take a stroll along Phewa Lake, and enjoy the luxury of paved roads and laid-back cafés. A great evening to celebrate the halfway mark of your ride. 📍Overnight: Pokhara 🍽 Meals: Breakfast

After a series of long riding days, today is for rest and discovery. Wake up early if you like and ride up to Sarangkot for sunrise views over the Annapurna range. Later, visit Davis Falls, the World Peace Pagoda, or Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave. You can also try paragliding, ziplining, or boating — Pokhara is the adventure capital of Nepal for good reason. 📍Overnight: Pokhara 🍽 Meals: Breakfast

Distance: ~115 km | Ride Time: 5–6 hours Leave behind the tourist buzz of Pokhara and head toward Gorkha, a historically rich town. The route cuts through peaceful rural landscapes, dotted with farming terraces and tiny tea shops. Gorkha is known as the birthplace of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the unifier of Nepal. You can visit the Gorkha Durbar (palace) perched on a hill, offering sweeping views of the Himalayas. 📍Overnight: Gorkha 🍽 Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Distance: ~135 km |Ride Time: 5–6 hours Your last day of riding! Retrace your journey back to Kathmandu via scenic highways.
