Ride to Mustang: 12-Day
Himalayan Motorbike Adventure from Kathmandu
The Journey of a Lifetime
Imagine this: you’re cruising through Nepal’s ever-changing landscapes on a powerful motorcycle — winding mountain roads, ancient villages, deep gorges, riverside trails, and finally, the high desert of Mustang. Each turn brings new sights, sounds, and stories. The 12-day Mustang Motorbike Tour is not just a ride; it’s an epic journey that takes you from the chaos of Kathmandu to the serenity of Muktinath, one of the most sacred sites in Nepal, and back through some of the most beautiful and lesser-known parts of the country. This route is perfect for adventure seekers who want to go beyond the usual. You'll pass through Bandipur, Kusma, Lete, Tatopani, Pokhara, and Gorkha — each place with its own charm. From cozy village stays to open roads under the shadow of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, it’s the kind of trip that stays with you long after you’ve parked your bike.
Why You’ll Love This Ride
- You’ll ride beside the
Kali Gandaki River Gorge, the deepest in the world.
- Reach the spiritual site
of Muktinath at nearly 3,800 meters.
- Soak in natural hot
springs at Tatopani — a treat for your tired body.
- Ride through quiet apple
orchards and the stunning village of Marpha.
- Cross hanging bridges,
ride under waterfalls, and camp beneath the stars.
- A mix of paved highways,
dirt roads, and rocky trails — enough thrill for any rider.
- Experience authentic Nepali culture and
Tibetan-Buddhist traditions.
Who Is This Trip For?
If you love motorcycles, mountains, and meaningful travel — this is your trip. This tour is best suited for riders who have some off-road experience and are looking to push their boundaries. The roads can be rough, the weather can change, and the altitudes are real — but if you're up for the challenge, this will be one of the most rewarding rides you’ll ever take.Whether you're traveling solo, with friends, or as part of a riding club, this ride is for the ones who prefer the smell of dust and pine over hotel lobbies, who'd rather sip ginger tea with locals than sit in traffic. It’s not about racing — it’s about experiencing Nepal at your own rhythm, on two wheels.
When to Ride: Best Seasons
The best time to take this journey is spring (March to May) and autumn
(September to November). Spring offers wildflowers, moderate temperatures, and
great visibility. Autumn, right after the monsoon, provides the clearest skies
and the most stunning views of the Himalayas. Avoid the monsoon season
(June–August) — it brings landslides, slippery roads, and unpredictable
conditions. Winters (December–February) are too cold and risky due to snow at
high passes like Muktinath. Plan smart, ride smooth!
What You’ll Ride
The roads you’ll be covering are as diverse as the landscapes — smooth tarmac, gravel paths, dry riverbeds, steep climbs, and sharp hairpins. You’ll need a reliable, tough machine. Recommended Bikes:
- Royal Enfield Himalayan (411cc) – the beast for Himalayan terrain.
- Royal Enfield Classic 500 – great torque, classic style.
- Honda CRF or XR series – nimble and great for off-road.
Gears to Bring:
• Helmet (full-face recommended)
• Armored jacket and pants
• Waterproof boots and gloves
• Thermal wear (for high altitudes)
• Raincoat or shell layer
• Hydration pack, sunglasses, sunblock, neck buff
• Tool kit, flashlight, and a personal medical pouch
Staying & Eating Along the Way
You’ll experience a variety of stays — from clean city hotels to warm, rustic guesthouses in the mountains. In towns like Pokhara, you’ll get modern comforts. In remote spots like Lete or Muktinath, it’s about simplicity, cozy beds, and hot soups. Food? Oh yes. Think hearty Nepali dal bhat, Thakali thalis, apple pies in Marpha, and steaming bowls of thukpa. You’ll eat like a local and love every bite.
Permits & Documents
You’ll need a few things to make your journey legal and smooth:
- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
- TIMS Card (Trekkers' Info Management System)
- Valid motorcycle license
- International Driving Permit (IDP) if you're a
foreign rider
- Passport and visa
What to Pack (Besides Gear)
- Passport & Permits (keep extra copies)
- Power bank & phone charger
- Sunglasses & lip balm (the sun is strong up
there)
- Snacks like energy bars or nuts
- Water bottle with purification tabs
- Lightweight towel, earplugs (for noisy lodges)
- Personal medicines and altitude sickness tablets
(consult doctor)
Safety First
While the journey is incredible, safety can’t be ignored. Your group will be supported by a backup vehicle, a mechanic, and an experienced guide trained in first aid. Ride responsibly, stay hydrated, and respect altitude. Take rest days seriously and don't ignore signs of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
The Mustang Motorbike Tour is not just about checking places off a list. It’s about the freedom of the open road, the hospitality of mountain people, the wisdom of old temples, and the challenge of rugged terrain. Whether you ride for the thrill, the culture, or the quiet moments by a fire, this journey delivers all that and more.
