Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is one of the most demanding and challenging treks in the world. This trekking route in Tibet is sacred to four religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are deeply numinous places where people claim to have experienced things related to the spiritual connection with Lord Shiva.

The average altitude of this trekking journey is nearly 5,000m. It implies this is a very challenging trek and requires strong perseverance. It is a true test of the mind and spirit. The entire journey is also known as Kailash Parikrama or Kailash Kora.

About Mount Kailash

Mount Kailash is a sacred mountain for Hindus, Buddhists, Jain, and Bon. It is located in Ngari Prefecture, Tibet. Pilgrimage from all over the world visits this mountain every year. Lake Mansarovar is a holy lake located about 50km south of Mount Kailash. Mount Kailash is popular for the strong belief that Lord Shiva himself resides there and it is the center of the entire universe. It is believed that completing the 3 days of circuit trekking around Mount Kailash gets you blessings from Lord Shiva in Hinduism and Guru in Buddhism. Due to that belief, everybody wishes to complete the circuit around Mount Kailash and take a holy bath at Lake Mansarovar.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra trekking route is about 53-kilometres that starts and ends at Darchen. Darchen is at an altitude of 4,575 metres. Bon pilgrimage makes anti-clockwise parikrama, while Hindu pilgrimage makes a clockwise parikrama. Most pilgrims attempt to make the Kailash parikrama three or more times in their lifetime.

Detail Itinerary

Early morning, we take a drive to the Syaprubesi from Kathmandu which takes approximately 8 - 9 hours. Syfrubesi is at a higher altitude (2380 meters) than Kathmandu helping in acclimatization. Overnight in Guest house.

We drive to Rasuwagadhi, a border town with Tibet. After lunch and immigration formalities - we cross the friendship bridge and queue up for immigration. Our Chinese guide will assist us throughout the process. After the completion of the immigration process, we continue our ride to Kyirong town. Overnight at Guest House with dormitory facility.

Today we cross PekhuTso Lake, passing Mount Xixapangma and the Brahmaputra River. Further, we drive through Saga County and stay the night. Overnight stay at a guest house in dormitory rooms.

Today you get to visit the holy Lake Mansarovar. You might be expecting to take a bath in the lake, however, taking dips and a bath in the lake are prohibited. You can however bring water from the lake and bath on the side. Then, we take a circuit ride of the lake viewing Rakshas Tal and reaching Chui Gompa. Overnight at guest house. According to the Hindu religion, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma after which it manifested on Earth. Hence, in Sanskrit, it is called “Manasasarovaram”, which is a combination of the words manasa (mind) and sarovaram(lake).

This is a relatively less hectic day as we can wait till lunchtime to start our ride. After completing any pooja or rituals, we drive to Darchen, the base camp of Mount Kailash. The base camp is situated on the southern side of Mount Kailash. This is the starting point of our trekking yatra. Overnight Guest house (dormitory accommodation).

After breakfast, we take a short drive to Sershung (6 km) and start trekking the Kailash Parikrama. We need to walk for about 8 hours to reach Dirapuk (16,500 ft). We take lunch on the way. Dinner and overnight at Camp (tent/mud-house).

This is the day every pilgrim talks about, the most difficult journey throughout the yatra. The last pull to the pass is steep and, due to the altitude, unrelenting. At a dizzy height of 5640m (18600ft), the Drolma (Tara) La marks the transition from this life to a new one. 200 meters below the pass is a view of the lake of compassion, Gaurikund (5440m/18400ft). The path stretches ahead, with distant mountains on the horizon. The way down is long and the last descent is quite steep. Further, trek on the east bank of the river and reach Zuthulpuk. The total walk on this day is about 12 hours. Dinner & overnight at Camp (tent/mud-house )

After breakfast, we trek for around 8 km, and we will reach the place called Zhong Chu where a vehicle will be waiting for us to drive to Darchen. After lunch, we drive to Saga. Overnight at guest house.

After breakfast, drive to Kyirong. Overnight at guest house.

Drive back to Kathmandu and transfer to the city hotel. Enjoy some free time in this exotic city.
