Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Ri Trek – Trip Overview
The Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Ri Trek is one of the most complete and breathtaking trekking experiences in Nepal’s Everest region. This 16–18 day adventure combines the classic Everest Base Camp route with the scenic Gokyo Valley, offering a perfect balance of iconic mountain views, remote landscapes, Sherpa culture, and high-altitude adventure.
Unlike a standard Everest Base Camp trek, this combined route gives trekkers two different perspectives of the Himalayas—one through the traditional Khumbu trail leading to Base Camp, and another through the quieter, more scenic Gokyo Valley with its turquoise lakes and panoramic viewpoints. It is designed for trekkers who want a deeper and more rewarding Himalayan experience in a single journey.
Why Choose This Trek?
The Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Ri Trek stands out because it offers two legendary experiences in one itinerary. You not only reach the base of the world’s highest mountain but also explore one of the most beautiful high-altitude lake systems in the Himalayas.
This trek is ideal for those who want:
- A complete Everest region experience, not just Base Camp
- Less crowded alternative routes through Gokyo Valley
- Spectacular 360° Himalayan views from Gokyo Ri
- Rich Sherpa culture, monasteries, and mountain villages
- A more diverse and scenic trekking journey
It combines challenge, beauty, and achievement in a way few other treks in Nepal can match.
Route Overview
The journey begins in Kathmandu and follows a classic Everest approach:
Kathmandu → Lukla → Phakding → Namche Bazaar → Tengboche → Dingboche → Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp → back via Dingboche → diversion to Gokyo Valley → Gokyo Lakes → Gokyo Ri → return via Namche → Lukla → Kathmandu
The trek initially follows the popular Everest Base Camp trail through river valleys, suspension bridges, and Sherpa villages. After reaching the upper Khumbu region, the route extends into the quieter western side of the Everest region toward Gokyo Valley.
This creates a circular trekking experience, allowing trekkers to explore both major highlights without retracing the exact same route.
Key Highlights

What You Experience
The trek begins with a gradual introduction to Himalayan life, passing through lush forests, suspension bridges, and peaceful villages. As you gain altitude, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with snow-capped peaks dominating the skyline.
Namche Bazaar introduces trekkers to the heart of Sherpa culture, while Tengboche adds spiritual depth with its historic monastery surrounded by mountains. Higher up, the landscape becomes rugged and alpine, leading to the dramatic terrain of Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp.
After achieving Base Camp, the journey shifts into a more peaceful rhythm in Gokyo Valley. The turquoise lakes, wide open spaces, and reflection of snow peaks create a completely different Himalayan atmosphere. The climb to Gokyo Ri is one of the most rewarding moments of the entire trek, offering unmatched panoramic views of the world’s highest mountains.
Difficulty & Experience Level
This trek is considered challenging, mainly due to its duration and high altitude rather than technical difficulty. No climbing skills are required, but good physical fitness and mental preparation are essential. Proper acclimatization days are included to ensure safety and comfort.
It is suitable for experienced trekkers as well as fit beginners looking for a serious Himalayan adventure.
Best Season
- Spring (March–May): Rhododendron blooms, clear skies, stable weather
- Autumn (September–November): Best visibility, crisp air, ideal trekking conditions
