Introduction: What Is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
Have you ever heard of a journey so powerful that people say it changes your life forever? The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is exactly that. It is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in the world a journey to the foot of Mt. Kailash and the shores of Lake Mansarovar, located in the remote highlands of Tibet.
Did you know? Four of Asia's greatest rivers the Brahmaputra, Indus, Sutlej, and Karnali all begin near Mt. Kailash. Ancient people believed this was proof that Kailash is the centre of the world.
2026 A Very Special Year: According to the Tibetan calendar, 2026 is the Year of the Horse. Completing even one Kailash Kora (walk around the mountain) in this year carries the same spiritual merit as completing 13 Koras in a normal year. This happens only once every 12 years. The next Horse Year is 2038.

The Route Explained Simply
Think of the journey in five stages:
- Stage 1 Kathmandu to the Border (Days 1–2): You start in Kathmandu, Nepal's capital city at 1300m. After a yatra briefing and overnight rest, we drive 145 km north through beautiful hills and river valleys to Kyirung a border town at 1600m.
- Stage 2 Entering Tibet and Acclimatizing (Days 3–4): We cross into Tibet and reach Gyirung County at 2800m. You rest here for a full day so your body can get used to the thinner air at higher altitude. Think of it like letting your body 'charge up' for what's ahead.
- Stage 3 Across the Tibetan Plateau (Days 5–6): This is where Tibet's famous wide-open landscape begins. We drive through Saga (4500m) and then all the way to Lake Mansarovar (4550m) a 480 km drive. The views of the plateau, wildlife like wild donkeys and Tibetan gazelles, and the feeling of being on top of the world are unforgettable.
- Stage 4 Lake Mansarovar and the Kailash Kora (Days 7–10): This is the heart of the Yatra. First, you circle Lake Mansarovar by vehicle (102 km), take a holy bath, and perform Puja. Then you drive to Darchen village, the starting point of the Kailash Kora. The 3-day trek around Mt. Kailash covers about 42 km and includes the famous Dolma-La Pass crossing at 5630m
- Stage 5 The Return Journey (Days 11–13): We retrace the same route back through Saga, Gyirung, and across the Nepal border to Kathmandu. You receive your completion certificate on the final morning.
The 3-Day Kailash Kora (Trek
Around the Mountain)
The Kailash Kora is the main trekking part of the Yatra. You walk a full circle around Mt. Kailash over three days. Here is what each day looks like in simple terms:
- Kora Day 1 (12
km, 7–8 hours): Start at Yamdwar Gate → walk along the western side of Kailash
→ enjoy views of the north face → reach Diraphuk camp at 4860m.
- Kora Day 2 (22
km, around 12 hours): The hardest day climb up to Dolma-La Pass (5630m), the
highest point of the trek, covered in colourful prayer flags → descend past the
sacred Gauri Kund lake → reach Zutalphuk camp at 4650m.
- Kora Day 3 (8 km, 2–3 hours): A short, easy walk back to Darchen to complete the circle. You did it!
